Scroll Technologies Receives INDUSTRYWEEK s

"Best Plant Award"

ARKADELPHIA, ARKANSAS OCTOBER 13, 1999 Scroll  Technologies has been selected by INDUSTRYWEEK magazine  as one of the 10 Best Plants in North America. The company, a  joint venture between York International s Bristol compressor  group and United Technologies Carrier Carlyle division, will  be presented with the "Best Plants Award" at a ceremony at its  plant and headquarters location in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.

For each of the last 10 years, the "Best Plants Award" has  been given to 10 manufacturing facilities nationwide. This  year s winners were selected from a record pool of 419  nominations.

"These plants are the finest in North America and among the  best in the world," said Editor-in-Chief John R. Brandt.  "Their success stories tales of teamwork and achievement  against long odds are inspirations for managers everywhere."

A team of INDUSTRYWEEK editors  evaluated nominees. Plants reported performance metrics and  practices in such categories as benchmarking, community  involvement, customer and supplier relations, employee  involvement, environment and safety programs, inventory  management, manufacturing operations and flexibility, market  results, productivity, quality, and use of technology.

Scroll Technologies compressor manufacturing facility of  Arkadelphia, Arkansas is one of the most advanced production  plants of its kind in North America. Developed to set new  standards of excellence in the heating, ventilating and air  conditioning industry, Scroll Technologies is a joint venture  between York International s ( NYSE:YRK) Bristol compressor  group and Carrier s Corporation s Carlyle compressor division.  The scroll compressor manufactured here is sold exclusively  through these partners as the Infinity for York s Bristol  compressor group and Millennium for Carrier Carlyle. Bristol  is a division of York International and Carrier is a  subsidiary of United Technologies (NYSE:UTX), which are two of  the largest HVAC equipment manufacturers in the world.

Scroll Technologies has 100%, on-time delivery performance  and has reduced lead times from three weeks to two weeks in  recent years. The plant has reduced defect rates by more than  two-thirds since 1997. With nearly 100 computer numerical  control (CNC) production machines in the machine shop, Scroll  Technologies has the ability to double its current output.

Scroll Technologies has an all-salaried workforce and  emphasizes the importance of working in teams across  departments. Safety is another element of their success. Since  June of 1997, employees worked 2.3 million hours without a  lost time injury.
